Philly Dreamin' & Becoming
`Dreams are powerful visions of a better future, offering purpose and guidance throughout life's journey. To achieve the life you envision, you must dream. As educators, it is our responsibility to nurture and inspire students to bring their dreams to life. Art educators play a vital role in transforming students' visions into reality, as dreams are the foundation of success.
I am deeply connected to dreaming, which has shaped my journey and successes. My life has been guided by vivid, colorful images of my future, a perspective reflected in my artwork. Growing up in Philadelphia, the poorest major city in America, dreams often represent hope and a path out of poverty. Many, like myself, dream of escaping hardship and achieving stability. My paintings are a reflection of my past, present, and future—my hopes, challenges, and growth.
This body of work retraces my personal journey and connection to my community through the lens of currere, an educational method with four stages: regressive, progressive, analytical, and synthetic. By revisiting my past and imagining the future, I analyzed how these timelines intertwine and inform my present. My artwork revisits meaningful places in Philadelphia, connecting my personal history to the broader community. I aim to show how seeing one’s home reflected in fine art can foster a sense of belonging and connection, particularly for those who often lack access to art as a luxury.
As an artist and educator, I draw on my experiences growing up in a working-class family in Philadelphia. I am the first in my family to pursue higher education, a journey marked by resilience and determination. This painting series reflects my identity, dreams, and purpose, rooted in equity and inspired by my commitment to urban education.
My work speaks to the stark financial disparities in Philadelphia and the importance of creating opportunities for all.
These paintings are my visual "Why"—a blend of dreamy optimism and gritty realism, embodying my life’s journey and the experiences of the students I serve. Together, we mirror the human experience, navigating our pasts, presents, and futures. My art is a tribute to my community, my aspirations, and the enduring power of dreams.
